1950 Gibson Southern Jumbo
1950 Gibson Southern Jumbo
As the slightly fancier brother of the J-45, you’d think the Southern Jumbo would get as much recognition as its less appointed, more famous sibling. Designed in the 1940’s to appease the pearl loving cowboy folk who played Martin’s blingier models, the Southern Jumbo, for some odd reason with its flashier inlays and neck binding (literally the only difference) has never captured the hearts of players like the J-45 has, but hey, this passes on the savings to you!
This particular example from 1950 is in what we’ve come to refer to as “player condition”, having a fair few repairs in its 75 years of existence; multiple top crack repairs, a neck reset, a bridge reset, and a neck crack repair. All this being said, the guitar is still all the original parts, which helps it feel less like an old wreck and more like a very well loved piece of the family.
The 1 11/16 nut, coupled with a very comfy early 50’s chunky C profile make for a very playable old gal, with a warm yet forward sound, just edging out of the 40’s overwhelming warmth and dryness into a more 50’s mid heavy tone, with a good balance between the two decades.
Comes with a hard shell case. Come get it while it’s here!
